I got my bottom lip pierced on the right-hand side about 3 weeks ago, and it barely hurt at all! Just a quick pinch...sort of like getting a shot. It was quick and easy, and finished in only a few minutes. It wasn't terribly sore afterwards..it was just weird feeling, and I couldn't move my mouth properly for a few days. I have been cleaning it twice a day with nothing more than antibacterial soap with a q-tip, and sea salt water...both rinsing, and then soaking on the outside.

I got mine done with a stud...mainly because I thought it would look better, and be a little less noticeable. I loved the stud I got! However, tonight, while I was driving, I guess I turned the ball too much, and it fell off in my hand. I tried to screw it back on when I got my car parked, but it was so tiny that it fell and got lost in my car!! So, I had the stupid bar in my face with nothing but the back holding it on for a couple of hours. It fell out one time, and I had to run to the bathroom to shove it back in. It didn't hurt, but it bled just a tad. >_<
I went to Hot Topic shortly after and got a new stud (which is too short at the moment since the piercing is still healing), and a set of hoops. I ended up putting in one of the hoops, and so far, it's been a lot more comfortable and easy to manage!
(Don't change your lip ring out until it's healed though, unless it's an emergency like the one I had! You're risking infection and it'll take longer to heal if you switch it out while it's healing. If you need to change it for any reason, be sure to clean it really well before and after you switch it out!)
These people are right about getting a stud at first...it's kind of a pain! Since the bar is long after the swelling goes down, it's VERY easy to bite down on it when you're eating, and biting straight down onto metal HURTS! I could have sworn I chipped a tooth the other night. O_o
Anyway, I recommend starting with a hoop...I got the captive kind. The ball is a total pain to snap into the hoop (I had to get my boyfriend to help me!), but so far, it's been worth it. Once it's in, it's not coming out until you take it out. Unless you're just dying to get a stud to begin with, I would go with a hoop until the piercing heals. :]

I got my lip pierced about 2 months ago. It did not really hurt that bad. It hurt for one second when the needle was pushed in. After that, she put the jewelry in and it barely swelled about 8 hours later. Ice really does help. I got a stud first, and I was personally glad I did. When you eat, the bar gets in the way and once in a while, your teeth will clamp down on it, but you definitely get used to it. I put in a ring about month after that, and I cannot where those. It pulls, and it hurts- though it might be because I put it in too early. The stud is much more simple, and since it can be a bit harder to work with (depending on the person) you get used to it much better.

The one on the top is wearing a simple stud... DO NOT get it pierced with that at first because it is harder to clean and after the swelling goes down the stud is going to be pretty long and might poke your gum or you might bite down on it and that HURTS! get the hoop at first then switch it out after it heals
